    Observations

Writing these words on Valentine's Day 2005, the proposed marriage between Charles and Camilla seems quite in fitting with love. Charles's Minor matches Camilla's Major, and his Major resolves to this Minor, intensifying his need for romance and a good dose of the erotic in the everyday. Indeed, I would expect that sex plays an increasingly significant role in defining for Charles a way out of the omissions and constraints of his upbringing. The fact, however, that this long running romantic and erotic relationship has finally got the seal of approval is both a joy and an anxiety for him, since this approval undercuts the way the relationship has both symbolised and expressed his need for an underlying independence from the establishment. He has most likely found some comfort at the cocking a snook at those around him and with the intimate conspiracy that he and his lover and confidante managed to create around his public life and duties. Although Charles may well find that respectibility surprisingly ends up taking some of the satisfying spice out of the relationship.

Now that their relationship is upfront, the couple should be able to exert more creative pressure on the establishment to re-define Charles' constitutional role. They are both in their resolutions: Charles to 8:4, Camilla to 6:1. She has turned from an energetic, amusing and somewhat irresponsible socialite, adrift from the realisation of personal ambitions, who appeared to take people and events as they were, to a practical person with a forthright ambition to win, making sure that Charles gets his proper due from all around him. It won't be easy for her, however, since Charles has resolved (in TO8 terms) to a rather contradictory position with regard to social duty and general standing in the eyes of others. We might expect a certain tension to arise between Charles's increasingly eccentric and even indulgent, though always penitent, behaviour and Camilla's more definite and clear-headed understanding of what Charles needs to be doing to win the love of his people and the respect of his court.
